Farmville, FML, Swine Flu Top 2009 Facebook Status Updates
Facebook has revealed its list of most-popular status update topics for 2009, and while newsy items like swine flu, health care, and Lady Gaga made the list, some random phrases made it into the list – like a slang expression for peoples’ frustration with their lives and the word “yard.” To reach its conclusions, Facebook looked at how many times a given one- to four-word phrase was used in Facebook status updates, and then computed the rate at which each phrase was used in 2009 compared to 2008. This year, the top three Facebook “memes” – or new ideas and trends – were Facebook applications, FML, and swine flu. Specifically, the Farmville, Farm Town, and Social Living apps captured peoples’ attention this year. “Since its emergence in June 2009, Farmville became the most talked-about application in status updates and now boasts over 72 million monthly active users,” Lars Backstrom, a data scientist at Facebook, wrote in a blog post. Coming in at number two was FML.
