YouTube on Wednesday unveiled an optional feature, called Safety Mode, that will let users filter out objectionable content or comments. “While no filter is 100 percent perfect, Safety Mode is another step in our ongoing desire to give you greater control over the content you see on the site,” YouTube said in a blog post . To activate safety mode, go to the bottom of any YouTube page and click the link that says “safety mode is off.” Turn safety mode on, click save, and you’re ready to go. To lock in this setting, sign into your account, after which you will only be able to turn safety mode off if you provide your password

Uh-oh. The LA Times reported Thursday that Hulu, which I lauded as the ad-supported repository of all things TV, is considering charging for a few prime-time shows: “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” and “House,” among others. “One plan being considered would allow users to view the five most recent episodes of TV shows free but would require a subscription of $4.99 a month to watch older episodes,” the Times reports.

Online video platform Boxee announced Wednesday that it will launch its own store this summer to sell access to TV shows, movies, and channels. The Boxee Payment Platform will let users “make purchases with one click on the remote,” CEO Avner Ronen wrote in a blog post . Boxee has not yet secured any content partners for the offering, but urged those who are interested to contact the company at content@boxee.tv. “The content partners we launch with will offer shows, movies and channels that were previously not available to Boxee users, be able to package and price as they wish, including pay-per-view and subscription., [and] will have the flexibility to decide what they make available, whether it’s premium content, content from their existing library, or extras that will never make it ‘air air,’” Ronen wrote

Several days after rolling out an updated privacy policy, Facebook on Thursday made a slight tweak to a new Friends’ List setting. Initially, users had the option to check a box so that their friends would not be able to see everyone on their friends’ list. Those lists, however, were considered “publicly available” by Facebook, so people who were not logged in could see them. That prompted some user complaints, so Facebook updated a recent blog post.

Two things have bugged me with Windows Live Messenger in Windows 7: I don’t like the way the Windows Live Messenger icon stays permanently in the Windows 7 Taskbar I don’t get sound notifications when I get a new message I have a solution to the first problem, but if anyone has a fix for the 2nd then please let me know. To move the Windows Live Messenger icon from the windows 7 notification area: right-click on your windows live messenger icon shortcut and click ‘Properties’ Go to the Compatibility tab and choose to run it in ‘Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)’ mode Your Live Messenger icon will now be back in its usual place in your system tray. If you can’t see it then you might need to customise your notification area settings to ’show icon and notifications’ for Windows Live Messenger. I’m not sure if this tweak will work for other programs, but it’s a worth a try.

At a recent Professional Developers Conference some details began to emerge about the status of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9). One of the things that is on the planning board is that there will be a performance boost. The performance gains are expected to be in JavaScript pages. Well, I’m back at the computer after a well earned break from all things electronic, mobile phones, computers and the like. I’ve been on stress free Norfolk Island, a highly recommended holiday place 2½ hours from Sydney in the Pacific Ocean. Paradise Found! Back home, I decided it’s time to have a quick look at Microsoft’s latest creation, Office 2010.
