Which is the Best Windows 7 Media Player? Part 1 This is sort of like a part two to my previous write-up about the best options for media in Windows 7. Some users took the time to add their favorite choices in the comments, so I decided to give their choices a little justice, download them and check them out myself. Here are my conclusions on the options that I test drove: MediaMonkey: MediaMonkey has almost a cult-following in the media player and management realm

The Lower Merion School District in suburban Pennsylvania issued MacBooks to their students, then allegedly used remote-access software to spy on one of their students, according to a suit. Or did it? BoingBoing fueled the fires on Thursday by reporting details of the suit, and other blogs jumped in. But in a response from the school superintendent, Christopher McGinley, denied the charges, claiming that the remote software was only used for the “limited purpose of locating a lost, stolen or missing laptop”.

At a press event in Barcelona, Spain at the World Mobile Congress event, Microsoft have unveiled the new Windows Phone 7 Series, and it’s very different from any version of Windows Mobile that’s come before it. Full multi-touch is supported including pinch-zoom and the whole UI, from what we’ve seen so far, looks to have been revamped to make it finger friendly. The front screen is made up of ‘customisable ‘hubs’ and there are a great many of these you can use.

UK users have already had this feature since November 2009 , but Sky TV broadcaster has now finally rolled out it’s Sky player to Windows 7 users in Ireland. The service gives Windows 7 users in Ireland and the UK access to a range of live and on demand programming, including movies, sports, the arts and family entertainment. This is now all built into the Windows 7 Media Center menu. In the past you could access the Sky Player online but it’s much more convienent now that it’s built in directly to the Windows 7 Media Center. Ronald Dockery, client manager, of Microsoft Ireland said: With Windows Media Center we are continuing to deliver on how people are choosing to view their entertainment,” ”Teaming up with Sky was a no brainer, delivering rich content through the power and ease of Windows Media Center gives people the best possible selection and viewing experience right at their PC.” With the Sky Player weaved into the Media center it now provides users with a more media rich, TV like experience.

What is it about the iPad that has people so riled up? Both the media frenzy building up to Wednesday’s announcement and the almost equally frenzied denouncement of the device by most media outlets have been pretty irrational, even given the intense debate that normally crops up between the Microsoft and Apple camps (for my attempt at a level-headed look at the device, see my other site ). I think in both cases, it has to do with Apple’s failure to “get the tablet right.” The tablet PC has been around since the early 2000s, and while many people are drawn to the idea of a PC they can write on and interact with as they would a pad of paper, the concept has never really gone mainstream. This is in part due to the higher cost of tablets versus normal PCs and laptops, but it has more to do with the fact that the concept has never lived up to its promise.

T-Mobile will announce a partnership with media syncing app developer doubleTwist , according to TechCrunch . The app will be pre-installed on some of its Android phones, including the new myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition handset . This is big news for the Android community since no Android phones come with syncing software akin to iTunes. As of now, users mount SDs card to their computers and drag and drop the files onto phones. We’ve complained in just about every Android smartphone review that Android has no proprietary syncing solution

Honestly, who wouldn’t want to see some Pope Benedict live tweets from the Vatican? That dream might not be that far off, after all. In a message sent to his followers, the Pope sung the praises of modern technology as a method for spreading the gospel. “The spread of multimedia communications and its rich ‘menu of options’ might make us think it sufficient simply to be present on the Web, or to see it only as a space to be filled,” wrote the head of the Catholic Church

Most everyone has probably heard the saying that “history always repeats itself” and I’m sure that Microsoft hopes the old adage is true, because their next Windows Mobile operating system is reportedly being called “seven’, sound familiar? With the “homeruns” that are Windows 7 and the updated Zune software, it sounds as if Microsoft is ready to cash in on another lucky number seven. Last week, we received notice that Microsoft’s new Mobile OS would be delayed until 2011. Since then, several reports have Microsoft possibly making a new Mobile OS announcement in the Mobile World Congress conference being held next month in Barcelona. Perhaps we could be seeing the long-rumored Zune phone that many, including myself, have been clamoring for months. Not the actual Zune Phone AllThingsD blog, Egbert has announced that the Zune phone will be based…on the media platform of Microsoft’s Zune media player with claims of a five mega-pixel camera, Office features, Xbox live support along with 720p HD video support
