The Lower Merion School District in suburban Pennsylvania issued MacBooks to their students, then allegedly used remote-access software to spy on one of their students, according to a suit. Or did it? BoingBoing fueled the fires on Thursday by reporting details of the suit, and other blogs jumped in. But in a response from the school superintendent, Christopher McGinley, denied the charges, claiming that the remote software was only used for the “limited purpose of locating a lost, stolen or missing laptop”.

If you’re a media-obsessed geek like we are, you’ll know that Tiger Woods is expected to break his silence today with a short statement about his alleged infidelities, probably alluded to in passive-voice construction that never actually addresses the issue. YouTube, however, will show the press conference live at 11 AM EDT/8 AM PDT at its CitizenTube site. Tune in, open a Twitter app, and let loose.

First things first, a very happy new year to all our readers here at Windows 7 News. So what is Apple’s plan for supporting Windows 7 in boot camp? Several months ago now the company said they’d build in support for Microsoft’s new operating system by the end of 2009. Well that time’s come and gone now and the promised update hasn’t appeared. It’s still possible to install Windows 7 on a Mac but there can be problems. Some people have reported that the multi-touch mouse drivers don’t work properly while others have said the system can be slow to boot and operate, which Mac users would probably put down to the normal behaviour of Windows
However there’s still no support and this has got industry watchers wondering which of the three best possible reasons it could be… 1) It’s proving more difficult than expected to get everything working with Windows 7 2) Apple are far too busy on another project that is, for whatever reason, good or bad, requiring all the time of their programmers 3) Apple recognise that Windows 7 really is the solid opposition many people in the press have been saying it is for months, and anything they can do to harm it (even in small way) they’ll do My own opinion is that it’s a large chunk of 2 with a little bit of 3 thrown in for good measure. Apple are competing against Microsoft after all and the boot camp support would be supporting their rivals. They will have user data from Macs around the world no doubt that indicate how many people are using Windows on their Macs, and what versions of Windows they’re installing. It’s possible, though still entirely speculative, that they’ve seen an upward trend in the use of Windows 7 they don’t like. Whatever the reason, there are a lot of very loyal Mac owners who do genuinely want or need to use Windows 7 for whatever reason, and Apple have maintained a stony silence on when they’ll be helping them. They’ve missed their self-imposed deadline and are entering 2010 seemingly not caring too much about communicating with many of their own customers

Microsoft could see a two-pronged attack in 2010 hitting both ends of their consumer market for Windows 7. It’s no secret that Google will be launching into the netbook / low end market by the end of the year with Chrome OS, but there’s been fervent speculation about a forthcoming Tablet computer from Apple, frankly the only company who can revolutionise this market and make “the next big thing every year since 2002” sexy at last. As if industry watchers know that Santa delivered a very special package to Steve Jobs on Christmas day, Apple shares have risen by more than 11% in the last three weeks, and received an additional 1% push yesterday. This is fuelling speculation that the big announcement will come on January 26th at San Francisco’s Buena Centre which they have booked for a “major product announcement”.

Business firms that have moved to Windows7 have had different experiences after the fact; but their reasons for moving to Windows7 have also been varied. Here we look at some successful moves and what convinced the business unit to make the move. Gameware is a company sells team-branded bracelets, necklaces, key chains, and MP3-player, cell-phone and smartphone cases that are made from the same leathers and stitching used to make baseballs, basketballs and footballs. For Gameware, which had thousands of documents and images, misplacing any of them could create retrieval issues. But the Windows7 search feature made that problem disappear
