Microsoft has sold 90 million Windows 7 licenses since its October 2009 launch, Microsoft announced Wednesday. The announcement came from chief financial officer Peter Klein, who appeared at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. “We’re humbled and excited that people are responding so positively to Windows 7–our customers have made it the fastest selling operating system in history,” a Microsoft spokesman wrote in a blog post . Every year for the last few years a contest has been held in British Columbia, Canada. The purpose of this contest is to allow the best hackers to take a crack at browsers, mobile devices, gaming consoles and operating systems and see which they can hack the fastest. While this seems like a shady contest, the purpose of the contest is to find these vulnerabilities so that the companies can find solutions and keep their users safe. In the operating systems category, a security expert, Charlie Miller has taken the prize for the last two years

Intel and Microsoft worked closely together when Microsoft were building Windows 7, but there is still a lot of heavy lifting involved before migrating PCs to the new OS inside Intel’s environment, wrote Intel staff engineer Roy Ubry in a blog entry . Because Intel is such a big corporation with countless software programs and who knows what else, they will undoubtedly experience more problems than your average user. Challenges they are facing include issues related to backward application compatibility, Web browser support, 64-bit computing and privacy controls.

If you’re having problems with your computer and you think it might be hardware-related, one of the first things you may do is check for CPU overheating, drive failures, failing cooling fans, or memory errors. Unfortunately, to check for each one of those things you’ll likely need a dedicated application: one to monitor your CPU temps, another to check your hard drive’s SMART status, another to monitor load on your CPU, another to check the temperature on your graphics card, and so on. Enter Open Hardware Monitor , a utility that can keep track of all of those things and more, and refresh the data in real time.

We know that Windows 7 is popular and as we can tell from it’s month on month increase in market share it’s not showing any signs of letting up. Well I bet you wouldn’t be surprised if I told you that for the first 5 months of its release, it now holds double the market share that Windows Vista held after the same period. According to Web Metrics company, NetApplications.com, Windows 7 has managed to grab over twice the market share Windows Vista managed to attain over the same period. As of last Sunday, 5 Months after the release ( October 22nd 2009 ) of Windows 7, it held 9% of the market. Windows Vista after 5 months held only 4.5%

A year ago, before I joined Windows 7 News, I published an article entitled “ Windows 7 and the Death of Search ” in which I criticised the new search facility in the then forthcoming Windows 7. There are a great many reasons why this new way of searching came about, and why Microsoft changed it from the multi-level drop-down search of Windows XP. I said… You’ll see that with Windows 7 it’s immediately considerably more difficult to do a contextualised search. It’s still possible but you need to type text commands, and who is going to remember those? I’ll publish a complete list in my Windows 7 Power Users Guide. I did, it’s a shame that I had to, and in the next few days I’ll release that part of the book as a free download for you here. Dan Plastina, the then group manager for “Find & Organize” in Windows 7, and the man responsible for leading the team that developed the libraries and the keyword search in that operating system, was quick to reply to my article. For the masses, the biggest issue is one of users not discovering search features at all. In addition, the telemetry data we have indicates that keywords search is — by an extreme margin — the dominant type of search

I made the switch from my Web host managing my e-mail to Google Apps for my domain so that I could use Gmail to manage, index, and search my mail for all of my domains. Gmail’s spam protection, filtering, and Webmail access is leaps and bounds better than the Squirrelmail interface my host provides, and their buggy IMAP server. I just wish I’d had the new Google E-mail Uploader when I made the switch, so I wouldn’t have had to shift-click, drag, and drop handfuls of messages at a time between accounts set up in my mail client.
