So the rollout has begun and every PC user in Europe running XP, Vista or Windows 7 will shortly see the new browser ballot screen, if they’ve not seen it already. Last night I got my update and along with it, a few surprises. The first surprise was the apparent optionality of the update. In Windows update Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows was unticked. Presumably this would only remain so for a short period of time before it becomes mandatory. Upon restarting my PC, which wasn’t required, I was faced with both a notice about the ballot screen and a new icon on my desktop. In addition, and as expected, the IE icon in my taskbar had disappeared.

There’s almost a constant flow of rumors floating around the web as to when the next service pack from Microsoft will be released, not to mention what it might possibly include. We’ve heard news that it may include support for USB 3.0 and improved bluetooth support as well as several other things. However we have still been left in the dark over a release date for SP1 and we’ve also been wondering, Does Windows 7 really need a Service Pack? Well according to some good old speculation from Malaysian Site TechARP.com and some “reliable sources” Microsoft will send out 7 SP1 by Q4 of 2010

With this weekends news of the iPad’s impending arrival, HP took it upon themselves to give us a little peek and some more information about the HP Slate running Windows 7. While we already knew of the device, one key element of the Slate over the iPad will be the availability of flash for web browsing. Phil McKinney, vice president and Chief Technology Officer for HP’s Personal Systems group commented, “With this slate product, you’re getting a full web browsing experience in the palm of your hand…No watered-down internet, no sacrifices.” Personally, I don’t believe that Steve Jobs can call the iPads web browsing experience the “best-ever” when it lacks the one component that is used so widely, flash. Courtesy of Wired.com We still do not have the price structure and schedule of availability for the HP slate

Who says the game selection for the Apple Macintosh platform sucks? Lots of people, actually: the OS has a pretty grim track record when it comes to games. But things have certainly been changing on that front over the past few years. The Apple OS is about to make another bold step into the world of measured gaming respectability

Though cloud-based computing is quite popular these days there’s still a real need to run installed applications on Windows systems. In particular, I’m talking about utilities, those helper apps that do just one thing and do it well, whether it be playing or editing a media file or tweaking or peeking at a system function. There are software gems include functions that you might pay bigger bucks for, such as watching video with the supremely versatile VLC media player and editing sound with the open-source Audacity, which offers multitrack sound recording and editing with a host of plug-in effects available. Then there are utilities that help you see what’s going on in your PC system and let you take the temperature of your system and set it right, such as Process Explorer, Registry Workshop.

The themes for Windows 7 have really brought a new level of personalization to Windows 7, and being the Irish citizen that I am, I had to be the one to bring you the news about a new “Shamrock Theme Pack” for Windows 7 in honor of St.Patrick’s day. Yes it’s that time of the year again, and Microsoft have released a St.Patrick’s Day theme pack for Windows 7 in honour of the 17th of March. Of course this may appeal to my fellow Irish companions more than others, but “Paddy’s Day” is celebrated almost worldwide. Of course as the theme name implies, there is lots of green and shamrocks scattered throughout. Click Here To Download The Theme

Microsoft recently demonstrated some technology that would allow gamers to play some of the same titles on their Xbox 360 game consoles, their Windows PCs, and handsets running the upcoming Windows 7 Phone series. Eric Rudder showed off the technology at TechEd Middle East a couple of days ago – the demonstration showed a simple platforming game that could be played on all of the above devices, seamlessly transferring progress made in the game between the three platformers via cloud computing. You can see the demonstration in the video below. This is all made possible by Microsoft’s Visual Studio development suite, which allows game developers to reuse about 90% of the same code to port the same game to the three different platforms, with the additional 10% of code allocated to platform-specific functions such as control schemes. Cloud computing is quickly becoming popular in office and productivity apps – see Google Docs and Microsoft’s upcoming Office Web Apps for great examples – but it is still coming into its own in the gaming world
